75 kms North of Dar es Salaam, the town of Bagamoyo was once the main port and capital of German East Africa. Its name means "bury my heart" and it was the main link of caravans of slaves and ivory traveling on foot from Lake Tanganyika to Zanzibar, from where they were shipped off to various countries.
Bagamoyo has been influenced by the Arab and Indian traders, German colonialists and missionaries.
