popularly known as "The cradle of man", this site lies between the Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro National Park. It is here that the skull of the "Nutcracker Man" was unearthed by Prof. Louis Leakey in 1959. Laetoli, where the footprints of humanoids (said to be 3.5 million years old) were discovered by Mrs. Mary Leakey in 1979 is also nearby.
Archaeological work is still going on in this area.
Besides vehicle safaris to Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and surrounding attractions, hiking treks through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are becoming increasingly popular options.
A visit to the crater is a main draw-card for tourists coming to Tanzania, a definite world-class attraction, steeped in history and teeming with wildlife.
